Kolkata . National President of Jai Kisan Andolan and Secretary of All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee Avik Saha filed a Petition in the Calcutta High Court today, seeking quashing of the false cases filed against him and others by the District Police of Birbhum, West Bengal vide FIR No. 51/2022 and 52/2022 of Muhammadbazar Police Station. On 20th February, 2022, Avik Saha and other farmer leaders and activists had gone to address a public meeting in Dewanganj, Birbhum, organised by Birbhum Jomi Jeevan Jeevika o Prakriti Bachao Mahasabha to protest against the coal mining project announced by the Govt of West Bengal.It was a peaceful democratic protest but for reasons best known to the State Govt. it decided to lodge false cases against the invited farmer leaders and activists as well as local people.
In a connected development, a court in Siuri, Birbhum today granted bail to 9 persons (7 Kolkata based activists and 2 local activists) who had been arrested in the same case on 20th February 2022. Jai Kisan Andolan expresses happiness at the release of all activists and local persons who have falsely implicated in cases and had to suffer unjust imprisonment. Jai Kisan Andolan demands immediate withdrawal of all false cases against activists and protestors who are engaged in a peaceful and democratic protest against the coal mining project at Birbhum. It is the fundamental right of every Indian to peacefully protest against displacement from their home and hearth and means of livelihood and the filing of false cases against them by the State Govt is condemned and deprecated by Jai Kisan Andolan.
